What Placer is, precisely
Placer.ai is a foot-traffic and visitation panel. It infers store visits from mobile device movement and reports visits, unique visitors, dwell time and year-over-year change. Published public-sector pricing puts it around $31,000 a year.
The structural limit of any panel
A panel is a sample. A peer-reviewed study covering 2018–2022 put SafeGraph's device sampling rate at 7.5%. Every panel-derived number is an extrapolation from a fraction of phones, weighted back up to a population.
That is fine for direction and trend. It is weaker for questions where the answer has to be defensible to a committee, a franchisee or a court.

When you need something other than a panel
- Territory boundaries. A franchisee's protected area is a contract term. It should be derived from the road network, not from a sample.
- Saturation ceilings. How many units a country can hold is a geometry question, not a visitation question.
- Chain-vs-chain overlap. How much of your catchment a rival already covers requires both footprints routed, not sampled.
- Cold analysis. Panels tell you about places you already operate. Routing tells you about places you do not.
Narrative Geo does not sample. Every trade area is routed on the actual road network with OSRM, against full Census/ACS population and a maintained POI set. The drive-time matrix is precomputed at 1.08 billion rows, so a national query across a 20,000-store chain returns in seconds rather than being metered per location.
