Kroger U.S. store footprint: 1,250 locations, 63.0M trade-area reach

Kroger operates 1,250 U.S. locations. At a 30-minute drive those stores collectively reach 63.0M people — 18.8% of the U.S. population. Every figure below was fetched from the live platform API on 2026-08-09 12:56:58 UTC.

This page is a factual reference for the U.S. footprint of Kroger (KR) as the Narrative Geo platform measures it: how many stores exist, how much of the country they reach on real road networks, and who lives inside that reach. The remaining 272M Americans live outside every 30-minute Kroger trade area.

How to read national coverage

18.8% coverage means that share of the U.S. population lives in a cell from which at least one Kroger location is reachable within 30 minutes of driving. It is a reach measure, not a market-share measure: a household inside the footprint may also sit inside a dozen competing chains' trade areas. Coverage rising toward the high 90s is the signal that unit growth has to convert into intensification — more revenue per existing store — because there is no un-reached population left to open into.

Methodology

Drive-time matrix. Every number on this page derives from a routed origin-destination matrix: each H3 resolution-8 cell containing a store is routed against every reachable destination cell at the 5/10/15/30/60-minute tiers, using an OSRM contraction-hierarchy graph built on the OpenStreetMap U.S. extract. No radius buffers, no straight-line approximations.

Demographics. U.S. Census ACS 2023 5-year estimates at block-group level, apportioned onto 12.86M H3 res-8 cells by overlap-weighted area. Jobs and daytime population come from LEHD workplace-area characteristics.

Coverage. Population reached is the sum of population in every cell reachable from at least one store within the stated drive time; national share is that sum divided by the same cell universe's U.S. total. Cells are counted once, so overlapping store trade areas are never double-counted.

Store locations. Refreshed from corporate store locators on a weekly cycle. Counts reflect U.S. locations present in the platform at the fetch timestamp below, which can differ from a company's reported unit count (franchise/licensed formats, non-U.S. units, and in-line concessions are treated according to what the locator publishes).
